When should I use a Tax File Number declaration form?
You need to complete this form before you start to receive payments from a new payer, or your circumstances change.
When and Why should I use a Tax File Number declaration form?
Your tax file number declaration form must be lodged with Support Staff, within 28 days of the commencement of your first shift. When completing the form care should be taken with the question regarding the tax free threshold. If you need any help with this please ask Payroll or Finance.
The information you provide on this form is used to determine the amount of tax to be withheld from payments made to you. For example, whether you:
- claim the tax-free threshold
- are an Australian resident for tax purposes
- have a Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP) debt, or
- have a Financial Supplement debt.
Where can I find my Tax File Number?
You will find your Tax File Number (TFN) on:
- your income tax notice of assessment
- correspondence to you by the Tax Office, or
- a payment summary issued by your payer.
If you have a tax agent, they may also be able to tell you your Tax File Number.
Do I need to apply for a Tax File Number?
If you don't have a Tax File Number (TFN) you will need to complete and lodge an application form with the Australian Taxation Office. There are a range of forms available depending on your circumstances.
Am I an Australian resident for tax purposes?
Generally you are considered an Australian resident for tax purposes if you:
- have always lived in Australia or you have come to Australia and now live here permanently
- are an overseas student doing a course that takes more than six months to complete
- have been in Australia continuously for six months or more and for most of that time you worked in the one job and lived in the same place, or
- will be or have been in Australia for more than half a year (unless your usual home is overseas and you do not intend to live in Australia)
The criteria used to determine you residency status are not the same as those used by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship or Centrelink.
Can I claim the tax-free threshold from Support Staff?
The tax-free threshold is the amount of income you can earn each year that is not taxed (currently, the tax-free threshold applied to the first $6,000 of your annual income). It is available only to people who are Australian residents for tax purposes.
You can claim the tax-free threshold if you:
- area an Australian resident for tax purposes
- are not currently claiming the tax-free threshold from another payer*, and
- want to claim the tax-free threshold.
*You can claim the tax-free threshold from only one payer at a time. Generally, you should claim it from the payer you expect to pay you the most during the income year. If you want to change the payer you are currently claiming the tax-free threshold from, you must complete a Withholding declaration (NAT 3093) to advise the payer that you no longer want to claim the tax-free threshold from them.
If I am doing a temporary or contract assignment for Support Staff, who pays my tax?
When you are working at a client for us, you are one of our employees. That means within Australia you are covered by us for Worker's Compensation and Superannuation, and we pay your weekly income tax for you. At the end of the financial year, we will send you a Group Certificate to put with your Tax Return.
Am I entitled to work in Australia?
It is a criminal offence to knowingly or recklessly allow someone to work, where that person is from overseas and is either in Australia illegally or is working in breach of their visa conditions. People or companies convicted of these offences may face fines or imprisonment. To avoid penalties, ensure you have a valid visa to work in Australia before you are employed.
Does my employer pay super?
In accordance with government legislation in Australia, Support Staff contributes 9% of your ordinary time earnings into your super fund quarterly (this is on top of your salary - it does not come out of your wage) if you earn more than $450 per month. The default fund for Support Staff is Australian Super.
When do I use a Choosing a Super Fund Form
You may choose your own superannuation fund by completing the "Choosing a Super Fund Form" when you receive it and returning it to us promptly.
I'm a temporary resident in Australia - what are my super entitlements and how can I access it when I leave?
If you are a temporary resident working in Australia, you may be entitled to apply for your super when you leave Australia. To be eligible for a departing Australia super payment (DASP), you must have worked in Australia under an eligible temporary resident visa.
What happens if my super fund doesn't have my Tax File Number (TFN)?
While it is not compulsory to provide your super fund with your TFN, if your fund does not have your TFN:
- it will have to pay extra income tax on certain contributions your employer makes
- it may not be able to accept some contributions, and
- you could miss out on super co-contributions even in you are otherwise eligible
These rules mean funds may take this extra income tax amount out of your account.
Check your annual member's statement or contact your fund to see if they have your TFN.
